Lyrical documentary of a small mountain village in Portugal that lives in its own time amidst changes that shape history. The village has faces some changes over the years. Men have to leave the village for long periods of time because of their stone cutting work. When the men are gone, the women rule this village surrounded by snowy mountains, and sheep and cattle wander on once green fields while dogs protect them from the wolves.

Finland, 2007, Aki Kaurismäki

Part of an episodic film celebrating the Cannes film festival. 35 of the world's best directors were invited to shoot a short story for the film. The anniversary film's theme was cinema. In his episode, Kaurismäki pictured foundry workers who work day and night shifts in Karkkila, Finland. On their lunch break, the men go to watch a movie at the local cinema.

Thru the Wire

Nicky escapes from a prison somewhere between Alabama and Utah – sometime in the future. He looks for his girl in various bars and hotels, but all that he sees in his new freedom is that no one cares for the future of human culture.

Those Were the Days

A solitary man leading a donkey is turned away at a restaurant door, he and the beast walk down to “La Maison du Vin” where, despite a “no donkeys” sign, they enter and the man proceeds to feed the donkey. His care and feeding of the animal impresses the woman singing with the band – she and the visitor connect, but who will watch the donkey if they slip away?
