58% of the Swedish population identifies as feminists; so does Hampus Linder, the director of Confessions of a Swedish Man. His previous work tells the story of Gudrun Schyman, the founder of Europe’s first feminist party.

This time, Linder enters an unknown territory as herequests permission to film a gathering of Maniphesto, a Danish men’s organisation. The permission is granted – as long as he promises to take part in the program with an open mind. Even if the activities of the manosphere-inspired organisation feel foreign, Linder joins in.

The camera captures disbelief at the overemphasised masculinity, as well as uncomfortable moments in which he is forced to confront his own insecurities related to manhood. How
does one show care for other men? Or openly share feelings with them?

Rather than presenting a close study, the experience unfolds as a deeply personal essay. The director’s relationship with himself is mirrored in the men around him: his aging father’s
illness and raising a son complicate matters, while the charismatic founder of Maniphesto practices manhood through rituals and conservative family values.

The thought-provoking film offers observations on gender and masculinity, inevitably marked by contradictions.
