Rainer Sarnet's film based on Fyodor Dostoevsky's novel of the same name interprets the classic in a modern form, played by great Estonian actors amid the enchanting and frightening beauty in the middle of a sacred space.

At the home of a distant relative, General Mrs. Jelizaveta (Ülle Kaljuste), prince Myshkin is initially received coldly, but the prince's simplicity and sincerity wins the hearts of both General Jepintsev (Ain Lutsepp) and the housewife and daughters. Myshkin seems to see the human soul and open its depths to himself, freeing him from fear and awakening the desire to be good. The prince admires the innocent beauty of Aglaja (Ragne Veensalu), but the picture of Nastasja Filippovna (Katariina Unt) seen in the general's office fascinates him. Encountering this beautiful but miserable life burner who despises and teases all the men who desire him, Myshkin is ready to ask for her hand. This shocks Nastasia, who considers herself a woman for sale. But she goes with the gloomy Rogozhin (Tambet Tuisk), who loves her insanely. The prince hopes to save the soul of Nastasya Filippovna by trying to alleviate the human meanness, weakness, and hopelessness of Rogozhini and his friends Lebedev (Taavi Eelmaa), Ganja (Kaido Veermäe), and Ippolit (Juhan Ulfsak) in his gentle way. For a short time, Nastasja joins him, but when she reaches the last limit of self-desolation, she abandons Myshkin. Believing that the prince could be happy with Aglaja, who adores the young man, she asks them to marry and returns to Rogozhin. She knows that this dark passion has an inevitable end.
